Jan Lemon is the Programme Coordinator/ Hatchery Manager with Oona River Resources Association. As a volunteer and sometimes as a paid employee, Jan coordinates volunteers, summer students and project staff in all aspects of Hatchery/Resources Centre work, including salmon enhancement, stream assessments and inventory, habitat restoration, interpretive river and forest hikes and education and public awareness, mainly around fish, wildlife and the North Coast environment.

A big believer in sustainable resource management and preservation of wild salmon and their habitats, Jan supports any programmes that deliver positive outcomes for wild salmon

Jan is a self taught Fish Technician who has 30 years of experience working on North Coast Salmon Streams. Along with her father, Fred Letts and her brothers and husband Mike, she helped to initiate Oona River’s first mini-hatchery, and later to expand this programme to the present expanded facility.

Jan is no stranger to the salmon industry, having spent all her life around fish, growing up in the small community of Oona River, working in the commercial fishing industry, gillnetting and trolling the waters of the North Coast, first with her family and later with her husband Mike on M.V. Equinox. The years as a West Coast salmon troller taught her the importance of the salmon industry but also the issues around resource management, conservation, selective fisheries and sharing the resource for the benefit of all users.

Jan has extensive Knowledge of many streams in Area 4, 5, and 6, having.worked for three years on the North Coast Stream Inventory project, first as a Lead hand on the Area 5 stream Inventory crew and then the Area manager for the Area 4 & 5 Stream Inventory crews.

Jan participated for three years in the North Coast Land and Resource Management Planning Board as well as on the Community Fisheries and Development Board. She was an alternate at the Prince Rupert Regional District for three terms as well as the Secretary for the Oona River Community Association for 20 years. An active member of the United Church, Jan has participated as a Naramata Board Member/Rep, has sat on the Prince Rupert Presbytery both as a member and on the Executive and for the past 10 years has carried out the duties of an appointed Marriage Minister.  She is also a trained practitioner of Healing Touch and can do therapeutic touch and relaxing massage.

Jan’s varied background and her holistic approach to life has enabled her to help provide common sense solutions to problems arising around the use of our natural resources, especially wild salmon. Through her role at Oona River Resources Association, a non-profit society, she is able to interact with many students, visitors, and other organizations to help initiate change.
